Several major vendors have announced enhancements to their collaboration platforms that enable users to employ animated avatars, VR, or even hologram-like features instead of traditional video when they participate in digital meetings. These may be intriguing new capabilities, and some users will certainly be eager to experiment with these features as soon as they become available. But are these actually useful modes of communications—and who decides that for an enterprise? Furthermore, this new class of interfaces will raise many new issues around the etiquette and ethics of how users participate via these formats, such as:

  • When such functions are (and aren’t) allowed;
  • How users are (and aren’t) allowed to represent themselves;
  • Whether employment law has anything to say about how such features are used; and
  • What sort of information/data these modes will generate about the people using them? What will be measured, and how such data can and can’t be used by enterprise management.

Join your peers for an exchange of ideas that will give you some specific takeaways to help you brace yourself and have a plan for this next wave of disruptive applications.
